Like his fellow Gundam pilots, Chang Wufei returns to space with his Shenlong Gundam to counter OZ's appeal to the colonies. Though the Shenlong fares a little better in space combat than the other Gundams, it's still not up to the task of waging a one-man war against OZ's army of mobile dolls. Wufei allows himself to be captured, and the five scientists who created the Gundams proceed to secretly upgrade his Gundam at OZ's lunar base.

The renamed Altron Gundam, as indicated by its name (from the Chinese "er-to long," or "two-headed dragon"), has a dragon fang installed in each arm. These extendable claws, combined with a double-ended beam trident, give the Altron completely unparalleled fighting abilities. Meanwhile, its longer-range firepower is enhanced with a pair of beam cannons, based on the Vayeate's main weapon, which are mounted on an extendable arm attached to its back. Lastly, a set of "random binders" on its backpack give the Altron better space mobility.
